THE BEST MAN
"He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom's voice. Therefore this joy of mine is fulfilled." - John 3:29
The above scripture tells of a best man who is greatly excited because of the wedding. The best man in this regard is not the one being joined with the bride, but his joy knows no bound. This may appear a little abnormal, but I believe that there is something the Lord is pointing us to in this matter. John the Baptist was giving an illustration of the best man in order to explain his own duties and his joy. He would have been nothing if the bridegroom didn't come, it is because there is a groom that the best man can attach any importance to himself, and this brought fulfillment to John the Baptist.
We also must note first of all that all scriptures is profitable, we must also see ourselves as the best man when it concerns Jesus. The church of God is the bride of Christ and some of us will in one way or the other become the best man expecting to hear the voice of the bridegroom. If the bridegroom doesn't speak or does not appear, there is no significance to our person in any way. We would be nothing of significance if we do not recognise the Bridegroom.
This also will further tell everyone in the faith that, you can't act more important than the bridegroom Himself, you must realise that the only importance we have is that there is a bridegroom. If the Lord does not appear or is not real in us, our witness will not be genuine. We can't even take the place of the Bridegroom, this impersonation will be too fake and it will just be a futile attempt. We must therefore embrace our roles as a worthy best man and always long for Him to speak, so we can be joyful.
The scripture tells us in Ephesians 5:25 that, Christ gave Himself for the church He loves - apostle Paul drew a comparison between a couple and Jesus and the church, he said Christ gave Himself for the church. We cannot give ourselves for anyone, even if we attempt it, it can't save from sin - so there is no other role fitting enough for us as the case may be other than the best man duties - and it is indeed a worthy role.
YOU CAN BE HIS BEST MAN
"You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you." - John 15:14-15
For everyone who obeys the commands of Jesus, such a person has the potentials of being the best man and a friend of Jesus. The one who obeys the sayings of Jesus is no longer a servant but a friend, you are His friend if He shares confidential matters with you. You are His friends if there is constant communion and obedience.
Jesus wouldn't have been wrong if His disciples remained as servants, in fact, His lordship would have been more pronounced, but He has shared some level of confidentiality with us and therefore, we now know the deep mysteries of Christ. Three of His disciples experienced the transfiguration and He didn't keep anything private. How else can one show that He is our friend.
A total stranger cannot be Christ's best man, it is a man who has a bound with Him that has that privilege. We must desire to have such roles here on earth - it gives us an identity that guarantees relevance. It is possible to be His close friend, and there are saints who have gone ahead of us who have enjoyed such closeness with Christ.
"So the LORD spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. And he would return to the camp, but his servant Joshua the son of Num, a young man, did not depart from the tabernacle." - Exo 33:11
The man who shares closeness with God is not threatened by adversity, the man who becomes the best man for Christ is secured in the Lord's bidding. There can be nothing more blissful or so divine than enjoying intimacy with the Lord. When He brings a man close, it is mainly because of faithfulness and it is indeed a key requirement. The Cross will bring us salvation but our works will be the devotion to our Lord.
The scripture tells us clearly in James 4:4 that, friendship with the world is enmity with God. The man who is a friend of Christ must surely be separate from the world, sanctified by the truth and satisfied in all what Christ represents and all that He offers to the believers. This is friendship. No man can serve two masters, his alliance would be divided - but total loyalty makes us a trusted friend of Jesus.
Let it also be known to the man who wants to become His best man, that it is most certain that the man will partake of the sufferings of Christ and that in itself is a blessing, somebody like apostle Paul longed for that experienced, the disciples rejoiced that they were worthy sufferers. We gain more in this friendship but we must be friends also in all situation ranging from His blessings to His sufferings.
In normal marriage ceremonies, the best man is clothed as the Bridegroom, we too must attain a resemblance of the Bridegroom - this cam only occur if the intimacy grows.
BEST MAN DUTIES
"And at midnight a cry was heard: 'Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him!'" - Matt 25:6
The voice that cried is the voice of the best man, in excitement and in notification to the bride of Christ that Jesus is coming. The best man must take charge of his responsibility and make known to the whole world that the Bridegroom is coming. Our voices must be the one that makes that cry at midnight, just before dawn - so that men will hear.
You are the best man, I'm sure you do not want the groom to arrive to a sleepy bride, I am sure you do not want the bride unprepared because then there would be no marriage supper. Everyone who has friendship with Christ must make sure that we proclaim His coming and those who are asleep will check their lamps to see if it has oil. If you can't speak for the Bridegroom that is coming, your friendship to the master may be in doubt.
Many who claim to be His friend today know nothing about Him, they only pay lip service of their loyalty yet they do nothing. If we are friends of Christ we must bring more friends into the circle. Let us not pretend as if we do not know what this our Friend Jesus wants - except you really do not want to be His best man. A best man has the duty to make sure that the wedding holds and the guest are worthy to sit at the marriage supper of the Lamb.
"Then they said to him, 'Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?' He said: 'I am 'the voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'make straight the way of the LORD,'' as the prophet Isaiah said." - John 1:22-23
Men will ask us who we are and surely because of the reality of what we have known of Him due to the intimacy of friendship; we will simply declare that we are the voice that cries and tell everyone to make straight the path for Christ, just as John the Baptist expected Him, we too must expect Him and proclaim His coming at the rooftop.
If you don't have a report about this Bridegroom, then you can't be the best man. Let us imagine how glorious it would be on that marriage supper of the lamb, that we His friends be recognised as such. The end result of our friendship with Christ is so that the world knows much about Him. The one He calls friends must sing His praise out loud.
In case you are ashamed, then you do not merit His friendship, much less being His best man. We cannot be ashamed of the One who will bring us glory and fulfillment. It is foolishness to be shameful of that which is gainful.
BETRAYAL
"And Samson's wife was given to his companion, who had been his best man." - Judges 14:20
One will wonder what will make the best man accept such an offer, but this is the world that we live in, many want to be lord as Lucifer wanted to be, they aren't satisfied with the glory the Lord gives, they want to be exalted more than the Bridegroom...it is shame that is the aftermath of such intentions and action.
Judas Iscariot was one of those Jesus called friend the other day, but this friend who was suppose to be close betrayed Jesus with a kiss, and many times some of us who are disciples have began to betray the Bridegroom with the enemies who are against the marriage supper of the Lamb. We blaspheme His name, we sometimes keep silent about His arrival, some have even stopped expecting this Jesus - this is betrayal to me.
You have betrayed the Bridegroom if you are friends with the world, you have betrayed the Bridegroom if you are ashamed of Him. If you are meant to edify the church which is the bride of Christ and you are the one causing contentions, then you are also a betrayer.
"But behold, the hand of My betrayer is with Me on the table." - Luke 21:22
After Jesus made this above statement, many of the disciples started wondering who it's going to be. Judas himself knew himself, and I say the same to you today. You who is betraying the Bridegroom, you know yourself and it is a dangerous thing to do. Just before you are condemned, you can seek mercy and He will pardon.
CONCLUSION:
There is going to be a marriage supper of the Lamb, and it's really an exciting thing to be His best man, attendance is sure for that man who is worthy to announce the coming of the Bridegroom. Be His best man, that's where your identity lies.
God bless you and I love you
