LOVING PARENTS
"Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb is a reward." - Psalm 123:3
One may be tempted to think that everyone looking for the fruit of the womb will be loving parents. This may be far from truth as some parents have only come to see their children as trophies for achievement.
A default lifestyle of parents should be to love their children, and this is not limited to the things you give them, but on the effect a parent has on the child.
A father may bestow all his goods to a child, yet the child may never feel loved.
The love of the parent would be tested on the altar of sacrifice and commitment to the success of that child and also as God assesses.
COMPASSION
"As a father pities his children, so the LORD pities those who fear Him." - Psalm 103:13
Pharaoh's daughter couldn't bear the sight of helpless Moses, alone at the bank of the river, crying with no one to help.....she had compassion on the beautiful and proper child.
Compassion should be the very nature of all parents to their wards. Parents must be able to feel the pain of a child even in adulthood. If compassion dies or compassion isn't involved in parenthood, cruelty will rule.
No matter how macho a father may seem or strict, compassion is resident in his heart if he lets it flow.
It was compassion that made the father of that epileptic child broke down in tears according to Mark 9:24 and pleaded that the Lord will also have compassion.
Compassion as we see with Jesus will make solution to come, compassion is not crying without solution - no, it is not sympathy, it is being moved to ease pain...as a mother will not be able to stand the pain of her child.
"Can a woman forget her nursing child, and not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, yet I will not forget you." - Isaiah 49:15
The world has gone cruel. Parents sell children and mothers abandon their sucklings by the road side is the height of wickedness.
Some kings in Israel made their children pass through fire and God indeed frown at such abomination. Such parent can only be children of the devil and will be punished.
Feel the pain of that child and it will ease the pain.
COUNSEL
"My son, hear the instruction of your father, and do not forsake the law of your mother; for they will be a graceful ornament on your head, and chains about your neck." - Prov 1:8-9
Counsel goes beyond instruction at times, counsel is also derived from a lifestyle a parent shows to a child. No child will be able to go far in life without counsel.
Even though a parent may not be educated or sophisticated, a parent must have enough of well intentioned counsel to give a child without asking.
How does a girl child handle pressure from boys or how should she react when she sees blood in her pants at age 9? A parent need not to be in Harvard to counsel such a child.
Parents must not always assume that a child will know by instincts, but must be intentional in stating and doing things.
Prophet Eli must have thought Hophni and Phinehas must have been learning since they were church boys, but the reverse was the case.
"Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety." - Prov 11:14
Children may not always be able to understand parents' actions or see what parents examples are all the time - but counsel will make them see the motive and love.
Counsel has to be intentional as it is not accidental.
"And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up." - Deut 6:6-7
Children most likely, will be with their parents at e points of sitting, lying, rising and walking, and as they do so with parents, the parent must see opportunity to draw from their fountain of counsels gotten from scriptures to their children.
It will be disastrous if a parent doesn't have the word to use in counselling their wards.
The Scripture is enough resources and that has to be the standard of our counsels. The thing parents say must not contradict the Scriptures and we mustn't in any form place our culture over Spiritual values.
CHASTENING
"If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten?" - Heb 12:7
A lack of discipline and chastening to a child will only produce a wayward child.
No matter how civilized the world has become, the need for disciplinary measures are vital to a loved child.
A child must feel the consequences of wrong actions in order to know that every one in life will bear consequences of his or her actions.
It is an illegitimate child that is left to himself, though there are extreme cases of abuse, where discipline is intended; but if the love of the child is the motive - abuse will have no place.
"For I have told him that I will judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knows, because his sons made themselves vile and he did not restrain them." - 1 Sam 3:13
Eli did counsel his children, but counsel without chastening for wrong will mean no fear and no discipline.
Parents must be sure to know that God will hold them accountable for how their children turn out in the end.
The Lord said of Abraham that he would COMMAND his household. The word command implies a firm stand a father has taken.
Chastening has to also do with insisting and instilling obedience in children even though they can't fathom the logic behind instructions.
A child may cry and wish to be an orphan or even doubt if you're the parent, because of the things you command, yet you must not waver - if such will be to the ultimate good of the child... Remember you have God to answer to, over the destiny of that child.
CAPACITY
"But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever." - 1Tim 5:8
God has not asked you to give mansions and amusement parks to your children before you can have capacity. But God definitely frowns at a total neglect of your offspring.
Your children are your responsibility and it cannot be passed to another - not even your sibling until you leave this earth.
The reason why a girl child will start bringing things home that the parent did not provide is because the father has failed in providing, even if the possession of the child is as a result of covetousness, a father who provides will insist on the child returning such gifts.
"A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, but the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous." - Prov 13:22
The inheritance a parent will leave to a child supercedes material goods or investments, though inclusive, one must not be desperate to leave such.
A godly heritage is first an inheritance that money cannot buy. A good name is better than riches.
If in the quest of leaving an inheritance for your children, you get your hands soiled through sin, just be rest assured that such inheritance will be stored for the righteous.
A covenant of mercy through service to God unto your generations as shown to David is a good inheritance.
NEGLECTED OR SEEKING?
"When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take care of me." - Psalm 27:10
It may be that the points highlighted above are strange to you as you may have never known or experienced proper parenting in the light of these. You must be reassured that there's a Father in heaven who sees your tears and knows your need.
It may also be that you have lost your parent and it seems that help will not come, be rest assured that God is a Father to the fatherless and a defender of widows.
You also may wish for a child as you earnestly seek the fruit of the womb...know that your reward will soon come, as the fruit of the womb is a reward and that child is God's heritage.
"All your children shall be taught by the LORD, and great shall be the peace of your children." - Isaiah 54:13
God bless you
